Wroxeter Roman City — A Mini Pompeii in Shropshire
by DayOutPlans · Published · Updated
Just a short 10-minute drive from Attingham Park, Wroxeter Roman City makes the perfect add-on stop to round off a family day out. It’s so close and convenient, we decided to swing by just before closing after a full day exploring Attingham.
The site was quiet and almost empty—one of those rare moments when you feel like you have history all to yourself. As part of English Heritage, it’s well preserved and easy to explore.
Our son loved weaving through the ruins. Having just visited Pompeii, he immediately saw the resemblance. Wroxeter felt like a smaller, more walkable version—with the thrill of being able to step right into the remains of Roman buildings. A hands-on, time-travel moment for all of us.
Wroxeter Roman City is a great little stop for families with curious kids—especially ages 5 and up who love to explore, climb, and imagine stories from the past. The open layout makes it easy to roam, and the site is compact enough not to feel overwhelming.
